#2 of 3 The Royal Game of Goose the rules

 The Game of Goose

A Board & How to play

The goose board, dice & pawn

2 to 6 player game.

The game requires two, 6 sided dice, the board of 63 spaces with hazards marked, and game pawns for player

Goal land on 63 exactly first.

Each player rolls one die and highest roll goes first then play moves to the left.

Game can be played with gambling (I suggest chocolate kisses). If so players agree on the stakes at the start. Each player places 1 stake in the center making the pool. Every time a player lands on a Hazzard they pay one stake. When players land on other players including the prison and the well both players pay one stake. Fist player to land on 63 exactly wins the pool. Geese are not hazards.

(Bonus rule modern; you win one stake back every time you land on a Goose)

63 must be reached exactly, such Overthrows are completed by counting the excess spaces backwards from 63.

You will notice that the geese on the board are spaced in two sequences of 9 on the spaces

5,14,23,32,41,50,59

9,18,27,36,45,54,63

When you land on a goose you move forward that number of spaces again. Keep track for where you started in case you land on a players pawn and need to send them back to were you started.

There is a rule that covers the initial throw of nine, to prevent a player who rolled 9 on their first roll  simply hop by nines forward from goose to goose until the winning end space was reached.

The rule is that a players first throw of 6,3 means 'go straight to 26';

 Or a players first throw of 5,4 means 'go straight to 53'.

S. 6, a bridge, go on to 12;

S. 19, an inn, lose two moves

S. 31, a well, wait until another reaches the place then exchange places. (Modern rule; player rolls and if they roll a nine they are free from the Well)

S. 42, a maze, go back to 39 (or, in French versions, to 30)

S. 52, a prison, wait as for the well (Modern rule; player rolls and if they roll a nine they are free from the prison)

S. 58, a death's skull, go back & start at the begining

Landing on another player's pawn requires changing places & when playing with with an anti pot paying to the pool. Landing on certain hazard points also involves paying to the pool & has other consequences:
